APEX Laboratory

The exercise physiology laboratory (APEX laboratory) brings together three technical platforms having high-tech devices for the conduct of clinical studies.

The equipment of the different platforms enables the non-invasive assessment of cardiorespiratory and muscle function in patients with cardiovascular diseases and athletes.

Equipment and Services

Pavilion U Platform (moderate-risk population)

Respiratory Assessment (comprehensive airway assessment, pulmonary compliance, diffusion):

  • Plethysmographic box (VMax ENCORE 22D, Vyaire)
  • Plethysmographic box (Platinum Elite DL, MGC Diagnostics)

Cardiorespiratory Assessment (VO2 max, gas exchange measurements at rest and during exercise, resting metabolism)

  • Two portable gas analyzers (Oxycon Mobile, Vyaire)
  • Bicycle with an electromagnetic brake (Corival Lode)
  • MRI bike (Lode)
  • Treadmill (DESMO, Woodway)
  • Stationary gas analyzer (Spectra Vmax X29N, Vyaire)

Muscle Assessment

  • Isokinetic strength (Biodex S4 pro, Atlas Medic)
  • Force transducer (MP150, Biopac)
  • Magnetic stimulation (Bistim, Magstim)
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (Rapid 2, Magstim)
  • Surface electromyography (FreeEMG 300, BTS Bioengineering)

Other Equipment

  • Continuous blood pressure monitor (Nexfin, BMEYE)
  • Near-infrared spectrometer (OptiplexTS, ISS)
  • Portable 12-lead electrocardiogram (Mortara)
  • Two pulse oximeters with continuous measure and Bluetooth technology (MASIMO)
  • Bioimpedance balance (Inbody520, InBody)
  • Equipment for synchronization of analogue signals (Powerlab, ADinstrument)

PPMC Platform (high-risk population)

Cardiorespiratory Assessment (VO2 max, gas exchange measurements at rest and during exercise, resting metabolism)

  • Stationary gas analyzers (CPX Ultima Cardio2, MGC diagnostics)
  • Bicycle with an electromagnetic brake (Corival Lode)
  • "Pedalo" bike with an electromagnetic brake (Recumbent, Lode)
  • Arm ergometer pedal exerciser with an electromagnetic brake (Angio, Lode)
  • Treadmill (TMX 425, Trackmaster)
  • Bioimpedance balance (Inbody520, InBody)

Pavilion A Platform (low-risk population or high performance)

Cardiorespiratory Assessment (VO2 max, gas exchange measurements at rest and during exercise, resting metabolism)

  • Stationary gas analyzers (CPX Ultima Cardio2, MGC diagnostics)
  • Bicycle with an high performance electromagnetic brake (Excalibur, Lode)
  • High performance treadmill with safety harness (Quasar, HP-COSMOS)
  • Non-invasive assessment of cardiac output by breathing inert gas (Innocor, InnoVision)

Cardiovascular training on a bicycle (up to four participants simultaneously)

  • Four bicycles with an electromagnetic brake (Corrival, Lode)
  • Four three-lead wireless electrocardiograms (LCRM, Lode)
  • Supervising and management training station
